The Drawbacks of Texting
An Accordion Book Design/Rant
After a few projects researching the various aspects of the cell phone for a class, several things really started to pop out at me about this nifty little piece of technology. Among those were the benefits and drawbacks of a cell phone. In a typographic experiment, I designed an accordion-style publication wherein I essentially ranted and raved about what I thought was one of the more prominent demerits of the cell phone: texting. Through the utilization of a image-less visual essay, I tested the effects of large- and small-scale typographic elements as well as the idea of loosening up the standard grid structure in publication design. The resulting artifact was a book that could be read spread by spread or unfolded, expressing the emotions and opinions of the author through the use of dynamic typography.
